It’s Different Here

There are many weight loss programs, diet books, and specialists out there; unfortunately, they often have contradictory beliefs and practices. It’s hard to cut through the noise – and to know which is right for you.

When we say “Where Science Meets Humanity,” here’s what we mean:

  • Science: we build around solid, science-based knowledge. No fads, no gimmicks.
  • You: no matter how good the science is, managing weight and health is ultimately about you… your unique preferences, tendencies, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and all the other things that make you who you are.Here’s an example: science says that managing weight depends on balancing food intake and physical activity. While this may be true, there are many factors that go into why, when, where, and how much we eat. Similarly, there are many contributors to how much we move. Simply telling people to “eat less, exercise more” usually doesn’t help address the reasons why we have difficulty managing weight.
  • Perspective: this is the “art” of managing weight and wellness. Good science is important, but having the perspective to implement the science and the strategies into your unique life is essential.  Perspective is the “big picture” – if science is “the trees” of weight management, perspective is “the forest.”
  • Respect: Carrying excess weight can lead to numerous health problems. But it’s not bad or wrong – these sorts of judgments are inappropriate and inhumane.Managing weight is difficult enough – being blamed, criticized, or judged only makes it harder.  We neverdo that.We treat you with respect and care, period.  We approach each patient as a unique person, based on who you are, where you’re coming from, and where you’re going.

We are a team of health professionals who partner with you to build an effective, individualized, and lasting approach to weight and health. Collectively, we have more than 100 years of professional experience in helping patients address their weight and health.

We don’t believe in fads or gimmicks, we don’t sell diet products, and we don’t make typical faddish claims.  Our goal is to help you build a path toward long-term health.

Our unique process is based on several core beliefs:

Weight management and wellness are a process, not an event.

Traditional diet programs treat excess weight as a singular problem to be “solved.” This just doesn’t work.

Overweight and obesity are chronic health problems that require individualized management, not a “magic bullet” cure.

Could you imagine if we treated other chronic problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, with a simple “magic bullet,” and then expected the problem to just go away? This wouldn’t work, just as this type of approach doesn’t work for weight management.


More than just the number on a scale

Weight management isn’t really about numbers – it’s about people.

Most weight management programs focus only on weight. While this may seem obvious on the surface, it is rare that weight is a standalone issue.  We help you unravel the many factors that can cause or contribute to weight problems in the first place.

Seeing the number on the scale go down is important, but we especially want to help you build the skills and develop the knowledge to manage and maintain weight and wellness on your terms, for the long term.

Managing weight is about more than what you eat

Most people’s difficulty in managing weight goes beyond simply needing to find the “right” diet or exercise program. Ultimately, there are numerous aspects of our lives that play into our decisions, our behaviors, our weight, our health, and our disease risks. We work with you to understand and address the factors that affect you.
