(Psychological treatment and support sessions where patients engage in discussions and insight-oriented activities to build skills for long-term behavior change and weight management)

PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPLEXITIES IN WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Building a sustainable platform for health behavior change and weight management often involves attention to psychology. Topics of discussion include understanding and managing our motivations, exploring emotional eating, appreciating how thoughts and feelings impact our choices and behaviors, self-awareness, positive body image, and many others. The class includes short presentations, readings, and thoughtful discussions to explore these and other key topics.

ELECTION STRESS

On top of typical daily stresses, we are now dealing with COVID, ongoing political and social tensions, and all the intensity surrounding the election. Join in to discuss your concerns, anxieties, worries – and hopes – surrounding this election season. In addition to serving as an inclusive forum for discussion and support, we will also consider how these stresses may impact our attention to weight and wellness.

LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE

Making behavioral changes and losing weight is rarely easy, yet most people find that maintaining healthful behaviors and keeping weight off over time is often more challenging. In part, this is because during maintenance we are no longer buoyed by the reinforcing reward of the scale going down. This group guides you through the skills and perspective relevant for long-term behavioral and weight maintenance. Topics include the unique differences between short- and long-term motivations, competing and conflicting motivations, emotional and stress eating, and many other key themes.

COPING DURING COVID

Despite the outpouring of resources to help us manage our lives during the pandemic, there are specific challenges for those of us who are also working hard to maintain a sustainable approach to weight management. This group gathers our community to share how we are coping – both with COVID and with weight management – and work together to move forward.

LIVING SOLO

Managing our lives during COVID – especially the physical distancing from our friends, supporters, and communities – is difficult for everyone. Living alone presents additional and unique challenges. This group gathers those who are single and/or living alone to support one another and work together to navigate these unique times.

EMOTIONAL AND BINGE EATING

An exploration of two of the most common eating patterns that interfere with weight management: emotional eating and binge eating. We discuss what triggers and maintains these eating patterns and provide practical, evidence-based strategies for changing them.

STRENGTHENING SELF-IMAGE

How we see ourselves affects our choices, our relationships, and our goals. The consequences of low self-esteem can be precursors for many health related problems. If you would like to improve the image you have of yourself or deepen your own sense of self, join us for this weekly drop-in group.

STRESS AND APPETITE

Stress affects each of us in different ways. This group includes discussion of stress and explores methods for coping as they relate to weight management and wellness, including education and exploration of stress-related patterns in our lives. This group also includes stress reduction exercises and activities.

THINKING STYLES AND BEHAVIOR

This group explores how thoughts and feelings impact our health behaviors, such as getting active, “comfort eating” and stress eating, snacking, and more. Rooted in concepts of cognitive behavioral therapy, we focus on the connections between our core beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Topics include positive and negative thinking patterns, the “on/off switch” that often dictates focus for managing weight, and strategies for building sustainable health changes.

LONG-TERM WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Explores the spectrum of personal changes that are often a part of attaining positive weight management. The emphasis is on sharing specific experiences and supporting each other through the ups and downs of personal and lifestyle change.

CURRENT TRENDS IN WEIGHT AND WELLNESS

This group will explore recent scientific studies as well as current issues and opinions portrayed in the popular and social media.  Topics will include, but are not limited to, activity monitoring, the food environment and industry, body acceptance, mindfulness, and food addiction.  This group will involve both discussion and skill building.

* COGNITIVE THERAPY FOR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the connection between beliefs, thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Often, negative beliefs about weight impact weight-related behaviors. This group aims to engage patients in sustainable changes.

* EMOTIONAL EATING

Emotional eating is something all of us learned from the very first moments of birth – when our parents blended together the fact of eating with the wonderfulness of being comforted.  It is perfectly normal, yet stands as a very difficult problem in long-term weight management.  We work together on building a systematic approach to manage and explore emotional eating.

*WORKING WOMEN

Working women face unique challenges and obstacles when it comes to weight management. This group focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors for working women struggling with weight management and work-life balance.

GROCERY STORE GUIDED TOURS

This personalized tour (limit – 3 people), led by our nutrition specialist, provides practical guidance on how to make food shopping, weeknight meals, and snacks quick, easy, and healthful.

NAVIGATING NUTRITION

This interactive nutrition class will allow patients the opportunity to learn skills to navigate their food environment. In these classes, patients will also have the chance to ask questions and learn about the latest nutrition updates and hot topics

SEATED YOGA FOR EVERY BODY

No standing required and no yoga experience is necessary. In a safe and supportive environment, learn poses you can use in your everyday life. Find out firsthand about the groundedness that comes from cultivating a mind-body connection.

MOVEMENT CLASSES

Our movement classes (limit- 5 people) are led by a certified fitness instructor and corrective exercise specialist. These classes allow participants to vary their workout routine in a supportive and structured environment.

FEELING STRONG… FOR EVERY BODY

Feeling strong is important for body and mind. Designed so that no prior experience with exercise is necessary, this 45-minute, guided, gentle, online exercise class is helpful for 1) those who are new to basic strength training, and 2) those who have had a hard time adjusting their exercise plan during COVID and would benefit from a re-introduction to home strength training and fitness exercises. Exercises can be done with bodyweight alone, with light weights (such as a dumbbell or resistance band), or using household items (such as a soup can).
